What Is Reiki?

Reiki is Universal Life Force Energy. The Reiki Practitioner taps into an unlimited source of Universal Life Force Energy and in a "hands-on fashion", shares this energy with the client. The practice of Reiki is the art and science of channeling this energy to promote spiritual, mental and physical well-being.

The knowledge of an unseen energy flowing through us and all living things has been part of the wisdom of many cultures for thousands of years. The existence of the Universal Life Force Energy has been documented by recent scientific experiments and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process. Reiki is not to be considered a substitute for appropriate medical or emotional treatment but it can be used in conjunction with these treatments.

Rei -- Spiritual Wisdom

Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West in 1938, said the word Rei means "Universal". However, Takata also indicated that this interpretation is a very general one. The Kanji Ideograms have many levels of meaning. So while it is true that Rei can be interpreted as "Universal", meaning that it is present everywhere, this level of interpretation really does not add to our understanding of Reiki.

The esoteric meaning of the Japanese Kanji Character for Rei has given a much deeper understanding of the ideogram. The word Rei, as it is used in Reiki, is more accurately interpreted to mean supernatural knowledge or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from God or from the Higher Self. This is the God-Consciousness which is all-knowing. It understands each person completely and knows the cause of all problems, all difficulties and knows what to do to heal them.

Ki -- The Life Force

Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti (or Ki) in Hawaiian. It has also been called Odic Force, Orgone and Bioplasma. It has been given many other names by the various cultures that have been and are aware of it.

Ki is life force. It is also called the Vital Life Force and the Universal Life Force. This is the non-physical energy that animates every living thing. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it. When it dies, the life force departs. If your life force or energy is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When the energy is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life force plays a very important role in everything we do. It animates the body and is the primary energy of our emotions, our thoughts and our spiritual life. The Chinese place great importance on the life force or what they call Chi.

They have studied it for thousands of years and have discovered there are many different kinds of Chi. Thirty-two different kinds of Chi or Ki are listed in the "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" which is over 4,000 years old.

Martial artists use Ki in their physical training and mental development. Ki is the non-physical energy used by all healers. It is used in meditative breathing exercises called Pranayama, and by the shamans of all cultures for divination, psychic awareness, manifestation and healing. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.

Reiki Is Spiritually Guided Life Energy

It is the God-consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the healing practice we call Reiki. A meaningful interpretation of Reiki is "a spiritually guided life force energy". It more closely describes the experience most people have with it -- Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom.

Is Reiki A Religion?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma. There is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use it. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all. It will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God or from a Higher Power (if you prefer), many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their own religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony. These ideals are considered to be universal across all cultures.

The Reiki Ideals -- The Ethical Principles Of Reiki

During meditation, several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five principles of the Meiji Emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for his or her healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system.

The Reiki Ideals are guidelines for living a gracious life:

  • Just for today, do not anger
  • Just for today, do not worry
  • Just for today, honor yourself, your parents, your children, your teachers and elders
  • Just for today, live life gratefully
  • Just for today, devote yourself to your work and earn your living honestly
